There are four changeable qualities of light which the Lighting Designer may adjust to create a lighting design for the stage. They are:
The amount, or intensity of the light. The light may be either bright or dim or there may be a great deal of light from many sources or only a small amount of light from a single source.
Colour has a strong effect on the audience and can provoke emotional and psychological reactions.
The movement of light can be either the actual light moving as in a follow spot or moving light fixture, or it can be in the change in intensity of light as it is dimmed or brightened.
Light can be distributed in many ways. It can be soft, diffuse and spread out, as in the quality of light on a cloudy day, or it can be sharp edged and focussed as in a tiny pool of light picking an actor's face out of the surrounding darkness.
